Methuselah

Methuselah, that tall and twisted tree

Stands alone in the mountains

Harder than stone, her lignum vigil watches

The setting of the sun.

Little by little

The arching sun crawls northward

And Methuselah twists her bristled form to meet it

Cloying hard and clinging

Fast to the last dying embers

Of that brittle light.
